Foreign Travel: Passport / Visa / Customs Duty
Foreign Travel (The following information is as per the government website and you should check with your authorized agent about the rules applicable at the time of travel.) Passport: This is an important document issued by your country as a license to travel abroad. For this, an application has to be made to the Regional Passport Office. Along with 4 Passport Size (35 X 35 mm) Photographs, Original copies of Birth Certificate or School Living Certificate and Degree Certificate, Mark List, SSC Certificate and Mark List, Ration Card or Telephone / Electricity Bill and Bank Passbook and above Two sets of xerox copies of all have to be attached. Paste 3 photos on the application form and add 1 free photo. Passport is issued for 10 years.

Passport fee is 1000 and after about 55 days passport is available. Passport should have at least six months validity at the time of travel. For renewal within 6 months before expiry or 1 year after expiry, apply as above. Two xerox copies of important passport pages should be kept with you at all times as they are useful in case of passport loss. Online Application: By filling the application form on the website http://passport.gov.in, you will get the application number and the date to be submitted at the passport office. Then take a printout of it and fill in the information manually in the fields and submit it to the divisional office along with the original documents, two photographs, passport slip on the given date. Visa: A letter of permission issued by a foreign government for a fixed period of time to enter their country. For this, the rules/conditions of each country are different and one has to apply in the embassy of that country. Companion`s return air ticket and documents proving that you will definitely return to India e.g. Property related, income tax challan and required number of photos have to be attached. Excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, it usually takes three days for the decision of the application. Foreign Exchange: As per Reserve Bank of India rules, a resident Indian citizen can take foreign exchange up to a total of US$ 10,000 in a whole year from a bank or an authorized Reserve Bank recognized dealer for travel abroad other than Nepal and Bhutan. Of this, $2,000 can be taken in cash and $8,000 in check. For this you have to show your foreign travel ticket. Passport Note: It is not mandatory to note the currency taken in the passport. It can be noted down from the bank / vendor as per your requirement. While going to Nepal and Bhutan: Foreign currency cannot be bought for it. Any amount of Indian currency can be carried. But Rs. 500 and 1,000 notes are prohibited. For Foreign Education: According to the standard cost estimate of the educational institution abroad, a currency of USD 30,000 for one academic year can be availed by submitting the necessary documents. For medical treatment: For medical treatment abroad, currency can be drawn up to 50 thousand dollars as per cost estimate certificate obtained from doctors/hospitals in India or abroad. Up to $25,000 can be charged for accommodation and food expenses of the patient and accompanying attendant. Overseas employment: Up to $5,000 in currency can be purchased by filing an employment letter. Others: Purchases can be made using International Credit-Card / ATM Card, Debit Card while travelling. (Excluding things prohibited by Reserve Bank like lottery, restricted magazines etc.) Books etc. even while in India. Purchases can be made through the internet using the card. Up to $5,000 per year can be gifted/donated. Unused Currency: Up to $2,000 of foreign currency left over after returning from a foreign trip in cash / traveler`s check can be kept for any length of time for future use. If the amount is more than this, it is to be returned within 90 days from the date of return and in case of traveler`s check within 180 days. If a resident foreign currency account is opened, this amount can also be paid into it. Any number of foreign currency coins can be kept as long as desired. Any amount of currency can be brought when coming from abroad. However, if you bring more than $5,000 in cash or more than $10,000 including cash and traveler`s checks, it must be declared in a Currency Declaration Form (C.D.F.) to the customs officials at the airport. Indian Currency: A maximum of Rs 1000 can be brought in Indian currency while coming from abroad. Customs Duty: Shopping is an inevitable part of foreign trips. But if you shop with caution and keep in mind the rules of the customs department, you can get out of the airport with dignity.
