Located near the foothills of the Sivalik range of the Himalayas Chandigarh is a union territory that serves as the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh and adjoining cities of Mohali (Punjab) and Panchkula (Haryana) are together called Chandigarh Tricity.
Chandigarh is a planned city known internationally for its architecture and urban by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. The city experiences extreme climate and is surrounded by forests that sustain many animal and plant species. Sukhna Lake hosts ducks and geese, and migratory birds from parts of Siberia and Japan in the winter season.
Sukhna Lake located in Sector 1, is an artificial lake adjoining the Rock Garden near the foothills of Shivalik Hills. By damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills Sukhna lake was created in 1958. It has The Garden of Silence within it and is the venue for many festive celebrations like the Mango Festival during the monsoons.
Rock Garden also known as Nek Chand Rock Garden after its founder, has numerous sculptures made by using a variety of discarded waste materials.
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden situated in Sector 16, is said to be spread about forty acres has about 825 varieties of roses in addition to more than 32,500 varieties of other medicinal plants and trees. A parrot sanctuary houses number of bird species.
Starting from Sector 1 in the north Leisure Valley is a linear park over 8 km up to the southern most edge of Chandigarh and consists of many theme parks, botanical gardens and green belts.
Capitol Complex in Sector 1, Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10, City Centre in Sector 17, Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19, Sree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math in Sector 20, , International Doll Museum and Butterfly Park in Sector 23, Japanese Garden in Sector 31, Terraced Garden in Sector 33, Garden of Fragrance in Sector 36, The New Lake and Garden of Palms in Sector 42, Valley of Animals in Sector 49 are popular spots to visit.
