Known for the 6 feet high beautiful, artistic idol of lord  Bahubali identical to the Bahubali of Shravanabelagola (Karnataka) Kumbhoj is the place where Sage Kambhoja of  Ramayana Period lived  on the banks of river Godavari.

The idol was installed  in 1156 AD, on  Vaishakh Shukla Dashami,  on the direction of  saint Shri 108 Shrut Sagarji Maharaj. It is belived that due to the Spell-pwers of  saint Shri Bahubali Maharaj who lived here,  pilgrims were never harmed by any  animals in the jungle. Bahubali is supposed to draw its name after him.
A very beautiful magnificient 28 Feet Heigh marble Idol of Lord 1008 Shri Bahubali, was installed here near the hill in 1963.
Temple is open from 6 A. M. to 9 P. M.
Annual Fair is held on Kartika Poornima.

Kumbhoj is also birthplace of renowned social workerPadma Vibhushan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil.
