Originally known as Kirki (Khadki) this is city was named after Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who stayed here since 1681 untill his death in 1707. His tomb is situated at Khultabad, a small town near the city.
Two-world heritage monuments of Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, are in Aurangabad District. Aurangabad was a major silk and cotton (Himroo) textile production center. Small industries nearby produce Paithani silk saris.
Aurangabad is the major industrial center in Marathwada. Pharmaceuticals, automobile parts, and beverages industries to mention a few.
Aurangabad has unique places of interest.
Bibi ka Maqbara : Tomb of Begum Rabia Durani, (wife of Emperor Aurangzeb) is popularly known as the mini Taj. The Maqbara is amidst beutiful Mughal garden, ponds, fountains.
Panchakki : Panchakki is famous for the underground water channel with its source 8 km. away in the mountains and culminating in a waterfall which powers the water-mill (Panchakki). Mosque in the enclosure is beautified by ‘dancing’ water fountains.
Aurangabad Caves : (8 km ): 12 Ancient Buddhist caves are famous for iconography and architectural designs. This point commands a panoramic view of the the Maqbara and the city..
Khuldabad : (27 km):The tomb of the last Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb was built here only with the few rupees he had earned by stitching cloth caps. It is located in the southeast corner of a courtyard of the Burhan-ud-din’s mausoleum. Aurangazeb had chosen this burial spot and hence was buried here by his son Muhammad Azam Shah. There are other tombs of Azam Shah and his wife, Zain-ud-din’s Dargah, Burhan-ud-din’s mausoleum, and others.
Gates: Aurangabad had 13 gates on its periphery, famous among them are the Paithan Gate and Roshan Gate.
Quila-E-Ark: Built by Aurangzeb In 1692, about five gateways and a nagarkhana for the musicians.
Kali Masjid, Jumma Masjid: Built by Malik Ambar in 1600 A. D is a six-pillared stone-building.The Jumma masjid near the Killa Arrak has fifty polygonal pillars arranged in five rows and is divided into twenty-seven equal compartments.
Shahganj Masjid in market square is one of the finest buildings of its class.
Chowk Masjid: Built by Shayista Khan in 1655, it has five pointed arches.
Salim Ali Lake & Bird Sanctuary: Located near Delhi Gate, opposite Himayat Bagh was earlier known as Khiziri Talab and renamed after the great ornithologist and naturalist Salim Ali. It houses a garden and bird Sanctuary maintained by the Municipal Corporation.
By Air: From Chikalthana airport it is connected to Mumbi by Indian, Jet Airways and Air Deccan.
By Rail: Meterguage Station on Manmad Kachiguda Line directly linked to Mumbai and Pune. Nearest Station - Jalgaon, on Central Railways
