Jaisalmer Back
Founded by Bhatti Rajput ruler Raja Rawal Jaisal in 12th Century at Trikut hill and amassed wealth through taxes levied on the passing caravans from or to Persia, Egypt, Africa and the west.
Ala-ud-din Khilji, captured the city in 13th century,because Bhatti Rajput rulers stopped and looted one of his caravans on its way to Sind and ruled for about 9 long years.To avoid disgrace, Rajput womenfolk of the city committed Jauhar (self Immolation).
Now Jaisalmeris a major tourist destination as well as a cultural hub of the western India.
On Gadi Sagar Road is Desert cultural center and museum displaying rich cultural heritage and customs of Jaisalmer, through Rare coins, manuscripts,traditional Rajasthani textiles, utensils, weapons, musical instruments and fossils and `Karal`the traditional opium mixing box.Open 10 A.M. to 5 P.M.
Near `Tillon ki Gate` Gadsisar Lake is one of the major tourist attractions of Jaisalmer, a water conservation tank made around 1400 A.D. by Maharaja Maharwal Gadsi Singh for supply of water to the city! Now it is famouslake for bird watcher, surrounded by temples and shrines making it also a pilgrimage spot.
40 K.M. from Jaisalmer on Barmer road,is Desert National Park famous for Jeep safari to explore the magnificent wildlife, Camping, Bonfire and bird watching.Covering about 10 sq. Km of bare hillside Wood Fossil Park is (17 K.M.)on Barmer Road, housing Fossil remains of Jurassic era till 130 million years ago.One can watch Fossilized tree trunks up to 13 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width.
Jaisalmer Fort locally known as Sonar Quila, made of sand stones is the second oldest in Rajasthan.open till 5 P.M.Two hundred and fifty feet tall, reinforced by imposing 30 feet high sandstone wallit has Wells still providing a regular source of water.Even today,nearly one fourth of the old city`s population resides within the fort. Jain Temples situated in the Jaisalmer Fort are of archeologicalinterest carved in famous Dilwara style open till 12noon.The Tazia tower is a 5-storied structure with a balconies famous for their individual designs.Number of travel agents and tour operators in Rajasthan organize camel safaris.
