Alibag (District: Raigad) Developed in 17th Century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre (naval admiral of King Shivaji ), Alibag was the historic hinterland of Bene Israeli Jews and now it is headquarters of the Raigad district. It was known as Alibag due to the gardens (Bag) owned by a local rich man Ali.

Alibag witnessed some important Navy Battles.   In 1706 Kanhoji Aangre and Siddhi of Janjira faught at Varsoli, In 1722 English and Portuguese jointly lost the war at Kulaba for and  in 1730  Sakhoji won the war with British at chaul.  `Alibagi rupaiya` was issued as his Silver Coin currency by Kanhoji Angre.

Alibag beach is the main beach. Another beaches are THAL beach 5 Kms), Varsoli Beach2 km) boasting   large naval base, Akshi Beach (8km); Nagaon beach (10 km) known for coconuts and betel nuts.; Kihim-Navgaon Beach12 km) Awas (16 km) Saswane (18 km) Rewas: (24 km) Chaul Revdanda (17 km); Kashid Beach (36 km) with `white` sand;  Korlai Beach adjacent to Korlai Creole village (home to Portuguese speaking Indians) is a unique beach with alternate white and black sands.

Other attarctions are:
Kaneshwar Mandir (17 km) Karlekhind-chondi road.
Mandawa (20 km) is the Ferry Jetty and has  bungalows of  Many Fim Stars.

Alibag is also known for industries like Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, Ispat Industries, Vikram Ispat, (GAIL) and HP LPG, and Reliance Petrochemicals located near the town.
