Founded by Chandervanshi Rajputs the town of Kangra was known as Nagarkot and "Trigarta". It is also belived that it was founded by Raja Bhim (Pandava) it was known as Bhimnagar,. The Vajreshwari Devi Temple was supposed to be wealthiest in northern India. However the fort and the town was destroyed with the infamous earthquake on the 4 April 1905.
Sheltered by the Dhauladhar range, the picturesque Kangra valley is uniqe for its natural beauty and tea gardens.
51 Km from Dharamshala Masroor Rock Cut Temple built by Pandvas , also known as Himalayan Pyramids , have only nine shikharas in the temple complex which provides scenic views all round. The intricately craved panels and lintels depict scenes of celebration of the crowning of Lord Shiva
Ancient temples like the Jawalaji, Vajreshwari Devi, Chamunda Devi , Chintapurni , Baba Baroh, Baijnath temple are found here.
The Kangra Fort is also a popular tourist attraction. Maharaja Sansar Chandra Museum is near Kangra Fort.
Dharamshala Cricket Stadium (DCS) is famous for its location and good quality pitch.

18 km from Kangra, Dharamsala formerly known as Bhagsu is the district headquarters of Kangra district.The Dalai Lama`s residence and the headquarters of Central Tibetan Administration (the Tibetan government in exile) are here. It originally formed a subsidiary cantonment for the British troops stationed at KÄngra on the slopes of the Dhaola DhÄr, at an old Hindu resthouse, or DharmsÄla.
The suburbs include McLeodGanj, lying in the upper reaches, is known worldwide for the presence of the Dalai Lama. , About 9 km from McLeodGanj Triund is one day trek.

By Rail: Pathankot 94 km, Joginder Nagar 70 km. Kangra Valley Railway connecting Pathankot to Joginder Nagar covers the distance of 164 km with only two tunnels, one being 250 feet and the other 1,000 feet. One can enjoy panorama of the gold green fields and majestic grandeur of snow-clad ranges, also the Ban Ganga gorge.
