Declared a World Heritage site, the famous rock cut caves temples of Ellora in a crescent-shaped hill depict the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain faiths. Nos. 1-12 are Buddhist caves: ( 5th to 7th century AD) ; Nos. 13-29 are Hindu caves (8th to 9th century AD)and Nos. 30-34 are Jain caves (9th to 11th century). The most famous are monolithic Kailasa temple, the Buddhist Vishvakarma chaitya and vihara, the Jain cave number 32 famous for Yakshi statue and ceiling paintings.

Ellora Caves remain closed on Tuesday.

MTDC organises the Ellora festival of music and dance at the Kailasa Temple in December.

Ghrishneshwar Temple: In the vicinity of the Ellora caves is one of the divine 12  Jyotirlingas â€“ Grihneshwara built in the 18th century in red sandstone. Friezes and sculptures depict Lord Bhrama, Vishnu, Ganesh, the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, celestial beings, and few Maratha heroes.
