Mt. Girnar,towering over the city is a holy site for Hindus and Jains. There are 9999-step staircase to climb and it is a unique experience. Thousand-year-old Navghan Kuvo, at the base,can be accessed using staircase cut into rock plunging 170 feet into the heart of solid rock to find water.
Junagadh was a regional capital in ancient times til the 5th century and Uparkot fort, was built by Chandragupta Maurya around 320 BC,and Emperor Ashoka had stone edicts placed here,
Junagadh became an independent princely state, established by an Afghan ruler Sher Khan Babi.

After Independence  Junagadh with 80% Hindu majority, became a part of Saurashtra state in Gujarat.

Gir National Park(Sasan Gir):
By Road: 60 km from Junagadh,360 km from Ahmedabad. 

By rail:Nearest Railhead is.Junagadh then 65 km by road (bus/taxi) to Sasan Gir.

Obtain a permit to enter the park at the Sinh Sadan Orientation Centre, (7pm-11am & 3pm-5:30pm). A 35-40 km driving route through the park is maintained for visitors. (IMPORTANT NOTE: Unless traveling with an official and experienced guide, you must not leave your vehicle at any time, for your own safety as well as the well-being of the park and its inhabitants.)  Entry fees, per vehicle (6 occupants) Rs. 400/- (Mon.-Fri), Rs.500/- (Sat.-Sun.)
